What is General Internal Medicine?

Specialists in General Internal Medicine are full-body physicians. They investigate, diagnose and treat complex diseases that affect multiple systems within the body.

Internists don't replace primary care providers like family doctors and nurse practitioners. They work with these primary care providers to promote the overall health of their patients.

Internists must be knowledgeable in all subspecialties of medicine (endocrinology, cardiology, hematology etc). They are experts at integrating their knowledge across medical disciplines to ensure that treatments benefit their patients as a whole - rather than treating one part at the expense of another.

For instance - say a patient is diagnosed with a blood clot in their leg - but they also have high blood pressure and diabetes. An internist can develop a treatment plan that prioritizes care for each of these areas while making sure that the treatments do not interfere with one another.

In hospitals, internists are called on to figure out complex diagnoses and care for acutely ill patients. They act like detectives - sniffing out hard to trace diagnoses, or as coordinators - ensuring that sub-specialized care is well integrated.

We provide a wide range of medical consultations.
